Which recordings can you transcribe?

Almost any voice recording can be turned into text — what matters is getting the audio file off the device. Here is where common recordings come from and what format they are saved in:

RecordingUsual formatHow to get the file
iPhone Voice MemosM4AShare → Save to Files, or AirDrop to a Mac
Android recorder appsM4A, MP3, AMRShare the recording or copy it from the Recordings folder
Dictaphone / digital voice recorderMP3, WAV, WMAConnect via USB and copy the file
Call recordingsMP3, M4A, AMRExport from the call recorder app
Zoom, Teams and Meet recordingsM4A, MP4Download from the cloud or local recordings folder
Mac and PC recordingsM4A, WAV, MP3Upload directly from your computer

How to transcribe a voice memo on iPhone

iPhone Voice Memos are saved as M4A files, which Any2Text transcribes directly:

  1. Open the Voice Memos app and tap the recording.
  2. Tap the ⋯ menu, then Share → Save to Files.
  3. Open any2text.com in Safari, tap Upload file and pick the memo from Files.
  4. Click Transcribe and download the text when it is ready.

On a Mac, you can drag the memo straight from the Voice Memos app to your desktop and upload it. More about the format: M4A to text.

How to transcribe a recording on Android

Open your recorder app, select the recording and tap Share — save it to your files or send it to yourself. Then upload the file here from your phone or computer. Most Android recorders save M4A or MP3, and both are supported, as well as AMR from older phones and call recorders.

Transcribe recordings from a dictaphone or voice recorder

Digital voice recorders store MP3, WAV or WMA files. Connect the recorder to your computer with a USB cable, copy the recording and upload it. Long recordings are fine — a multi-hour lecture or meeting is transcribed in one go, with timestamps so you can jump to any moment.

Translate a recording to text

Recorded in one language but need the text in another? Any2Text first transcribes the recording in its original language, then translates the transcript into English or 50+ other languages, ready to export. See translate audio to text.

Tips for a more accurate transcript

  • Keep the mic close — put the phone or recorder within about 1 m (3 ft) of the speaker.
  • Reduce background noise — avoid fans, music and street noise where you can.
  • One person at a time — overlapping voices are the hardest part for any AI.
  • Pick the right language before you click Transcribe.
  • Upload the original file — re-compressing a recording to a low bitrate costs accuracy.

Common use cases

  • Voice notes & ideas — turn memos recorded on the go into text you can edit and search.
  • Lectures & classes — lecture transcripts and study notes.
  • Interviews — full interview transcripts and quotes for research and journalism.
  • Meetings — minutes from recorded meetings and Zoom recordings.
  • Calls & voicemail — written records of phone calls and voicemail.
